Important Things to Consider
The following items describe some important signs that you need to be aware of when choosing your franchise:
Location is everything.
Are you buying an exclusive or non-exclusive right to operate in a specific territory?
Would you get lost in a big franchise system?
Fast growing could be good, but will you get enough attention from the franchisor at the beginning when you need it.
A business that has instituted change in the past few years, for example introducing new technology, or adapting to changing consumer tastes, is a business that is living and growing.
What marketing collateral will the franchisor provide? You will want to see any TV or print advertisement or listen to radio ads.
You might consider buying an underperforming outlet that has not proved itself yet. Some franchisees are slack and have difficulty implementing the franchisor's systems.
Have a clear idea of how much money you want to invest. Entry prices for franchises vary significantly. You may get into a small coffee franchise for $10,000, but a fitness franchise could cost you $600,000 and a fast food outlet upwards of $1 million to $2 million.
