If you aren’t confident enough to start your own business from scratch then a franchise may be the solution. It can give you a taste of operating a business and if you don’t like it you can get out.

 

Firstly, you will have to get over the initial hurdle of being accepted by the franchisor. Some are choosy about who they let into their business. They are looking for franchisees with some business experience that will extend and reinforce their brand. Some franchisors set a high entry fee to ensure they get older, more experienced business people.

 

As a franchisee there is someone at the end of a phone to help you with questions and worries. Franchising won’t be for you if you need constant management.

 

In addition, if control is a big issue for you and you love doing things your own way, then a franchise may not be right for you either.

  • Do you need a licence or any special qualifications to run the franchise?

 

  • Would you be happy to work for long periods of time without a break?

 

  • Are you proud to tell people that you will be running this business?

 

  • How does your family feel about you going into this business?

 

  • What are your true feelings about the people who own or run the franchisor company?

 

  • Are you comfortable selling to customers and networking to promote your business?

 

  • Are you happy to attend forums and activities which could involve travel away from home?

 

  • Are you happy to regularly invest money and time to improve knowledge and skills?

 

  • When you have a disagreement with someone about something you feel strongly about, can you reconcile it without exploding or giving up?

 

  • Can you cope with stressful events and financial pressure?
